Design, amenities, and location make this hotel easy to recommend. I enjoyed my stay immensely, was a little sad when it was time to depart, and would gladly book again without hesitation.

DESIGN
Playful, Joyful, Whimsical, Maximalist - these are the terms that come to mind after my stay at Gorgeous George. Every square inch of this property is bursting with personality, and it's truly a joy to experience the almost chaotic creativity on display in many of the common areas. That being said, the design also imparts a calm comfort that makes your time in any part of this hotel - from the rooftop wading pool to your accommodations - an absolute pleasure.
LOCATION
Located in Cape Town's Central Business District (CBD), the Gorgeous George Hotel is the perfect jumping off point for one's exploration of the city. While not the most popular location for tourist accommodations and entertainments (that honor goes to the highly curated Victoria & Albert Waterfront), the CBD offers the visitor a more authentic Cape Town experience. When you step onto it's streets, you're surrounded by everyday Capetonians going about their business - grabbing a coffee, stopping into the pharmacy. In addition, being in this part of town makes it easy to support small businesses, which is always a goal. Check out the end of the post for some local treasures.
ACCOMODATIONS
This property offers three room types - Studios, One Bedroom Suites, and Two Bedroom Suites. I opted for the One Bedroom Suite and found it to be quite comfortable. The rooms are thoughtfully designed with everything one needs for a pleasant hotel stay - a comfortable bed, tons of storage space, comfy robes, even a Bluetooth speaker. Some unique features include a vibrant sitting room with a custom bar cart fully equipped with everything one needs for a few drink indoors (including a fresh lemon - French 75 anyone?). Another special touch was a french press coffee setup with fresh coffee grounds and few loose leaf teas to choose from. One thing the suite lacked was a proper table or desk - there wasn't a surface where one could work or eat comfortably. Not a deal breaker, but certainly worth noting. Because we're talking South Africa here, I do have to mention the load shedding and associated blackouts the country is known for. I am happy to report that I had no issues with power during my stay.

STAFF & SERVICE
I found the staff and service level at this hotel to be right at expectations - not above, not below. Prior to check in, I contacted the hotel by email with a request. That experience was great. At check in and throughout my stay, the front desk staff were competent and efficient - perfect. I had two meals in the onsite restaurant (Breakfast, Dinner) and ordered room service (Churros & Hot Chocolate!). None of my experiences with wait staff were ideal; from lack of knowledge on the menu, to forgotten items, there was much to be desired.

CHEAT SHEET
When in Cape Town's Central Business District, be sure to make a visit to Mungo. The store is visually stunning and full of beautiful textiles designed and woven in South Africa. From quilts to tableware, they've got you covered. I purchased two items for myself (throw blanket and a beach towel), and am in love with both. It's also a great option for practical souvenirs - a set of hand towels or a towel/washcloth set.
I know we're in South Africa, but what if I told you that just a few steps from the Gorgeous George was some of the best Ethiopian food I've experienced? I know you're probably skeptical, but stop by Madam Taitou and report back. If you're looking for an upscale dining experience, head to Kloof House. Beautiful decor, delicious cuisine, beautiful crowd, and long lines, so make a reservation.
